Mastering The Art

Mastering the art of your hobby craft skill

Piano music swirls in my head, scales, and chords. Chopin is calling to me.

I’m not sure when it happened, the desire to play classical music. I didn’t resume piano lessons in my late 30s to play classical music. It was to play rock ‘n roll and ragtime.

Classical? Who wants to listen to that, let alone learn how to play it?

Me.

It started innocently enough. Beethoven’s Fur Elise, Pachelbel’s Canon in D, and Bach’s prelude in C major. Well, before I knew it, I was hooked.

Although Rock ‘n Roll and Ragtime still hold my interest – the wild and furious melodies of days gone by capture my imagination.

If I were to describe classical music in one word, it would be life. It expresses every emotion, much like a quilt.

After 20+ years of piano study and practice, I have yet to master a Chopin piece.

But … I want to master what I do.

Piano. Quilts. Life.

It’s why I keep working on the same Chopin piece and why I’ve gotten it into my head to perfect my piecing skills.

After 30+ years of quilting? Sometimes a quilt comes out a little wonky.

This was true when I did a remake of my Monkey Dance Table Topper.

Halloween Version of Monkey Dance Table Topper

Oh, in the end, looks good – but it was a lot of tedious work to get it there.

My blocks were coming out a bit too small. That bugged me.

The Tools on Hand

Sometimes it’s about learning what the tools you have on hand can do.

I’ve had my sewing machine for, let me see, for over 15 years. There are things I have still not learned about it.

Discover and learn

I didn’t discover that I owned a Quilters 1/4″ foot until years later. I depended on that foot to give me accurate 1/4” seams. It didn’t.

The problem was, I didn’t do anything about it until I was frustrated enough to figure out another way.

I discovered that the needle can be moved a bit to the right. That was a cool discovery because it made all the difference in the world!

You don’t always need new tools and gadgets. You might only need to learn how to use the things you already have.

It doesn’t matter the hobby or craft. Sometimes I’ll think I need to buy a new gadget or a new piano book, but God has already given me all I need.

And, God has already given you everything you need…

Until next time, enjoy your day and the journey
